The fair skin of her neck and face shimmer
green
The dark lit only by pumpkin skins
She waits heart pumping
In the blank stare of the mirror a face slowly materialises
She gazes on it
glad he has come
Observes his features take
form
A face a mouth
uncannily like her own
She is not afraid
She seeks him in the shadows
cast by the oval mirror
every Halloween
Why does he come to her?
Year on year
Outside the window of her room
fireworks set the sky ablaze
Soon it will be her turn
to strike the match
push the darkness aside
The smell of pumpkin wine
fades into the aroma of nutmeg
and cinnamon spiked apple pie
She stared at her image
reflected in his mirrored eyes
Is he real? Or does he exist only in her mind?
His stare draws her in
His lips form the word ‘Twin’.
Twin! The word possesses her mind
Yes. It makes sense now
Her grieving feeling of abandonment
He is her other side!
The urge to be as one
together again erupts within
draws her closer to his stare
He stretches his hand, beckoning
She knows with utter certainty
this Halloween
she will no longer
hear
when her daddy calls her name
“Angelene/”
The mirror reflects back her twin’s smile
She know why he comes each Halloween
It is the day they tore him away
separated them
He died
She survived
Craving
to be reunited again
make amends to him
she meets him each Halloween
Black gloved hands smash his reflection.
She is not afraid
His smile waits for her
on the other side of the oval
mirror
The slash of its jagged edge
rips her throat from ear to ear
Dripping blood
Euphorically
she searches for him
amongst the shards of shattered glass
And finds him gone
